Paint Requirements for a Standard Project

For a typical three-bedroom home in Australia, here’s a breakdown of paint requirements:

  • Ceiling Paint: Approximately 20 liters, with flat sheen being the most popular. For bathrooms, use mold-resistant or low-sheen paint.
  • Wall Paint: Around 30 liters of low-sheen paint is needed.
  • Woodwork Paint: About 4 to 6 liters.

Paint Coverage Estimates:

  • Previously Painted Surfaces: 7–10 square meters per liter.
  • New Plasterboard: Around 7 square meters per liter.
  • New Render Work: About 5 square meters per liter.

Is the Paint Estimation Accurate?

While our Paint Calculator provides reliable estimates, certain factors may require adjustments:

  • Porous or Rough Surfaces: Up to 20% more paint may be needed.
  • First-Time Painting: Plan for 30% extra paint for wall preparation.
  • Ceilings: Our calculator excludes ceiling estimates, so remember to add extra if needed.

For a typical three-bedroom unit or house, you’ll generally need about 20 liters of ceiling paint, with flat sheen being the most common choice. For bathroom ceilings, we recommend using mold-proof or low-sheen paint to combat moisture and prevent mold growth. For walls, approximately 30 liters of low-sheen paint is often required.

When it comes to woodwork, you’ll usually need around 4 to 6 liters. In terms of coverage, one liter of paint typically covers 7 to 10 square meters on previously painted surfaces. For new plasterboard, expect coverage of about 7 square meters per liter, while new render work will require about 5 square meters per liter.

Is the paint estimation accurate?

The paint estimate may not be 100% precise, as porous or rough surfaces can require up to 20% more paint. Likewise, areas with intricate fittings will need additional paint for full coverage. If you’re painting a surface for the first time, plan to use up to 30% more paint to account for wall preparation.

Please note, our interior paint calculator does not factor in ceilings. Be sure to calculate extra paint if you wish to include them in your project.
